PI Sciences' Injuries and Evidence podcast

With an easy banter, Jason Wardell and Gerry Kaplan talk about independent medical examinations and impairment ratings. Our partner, PI Sciences hosts Gerry on their  Injuries and Evidence podcast. Jason is co-founder of PI Sciences, makers of medical/legal case management software in the cloud. Topics they cover in this 30-minute interview include: the challenge and opportunity of AI in medical impairment ratings; the history of the AMA Guides; the late Dr. Stanley Kaplan’s long-standing role refining and teaching the standards and practices for IMEs; and running medical/legal software companies.

Jason and Gerry talk about how AI can streamline workflow and processes for doctors and lawyers. Gerry notes that the inherent ambiguity of assigning an impairment rating requires case by case judgement. This ambiguity in the Guides makes the application of AI challenging. He also discusses the differences between the AMA Guides 5th edition and 6th edition and how AI might fit each of them. The podcast also digs into how Gerry goes about reading the Guides and interpreting it for software, even imagining bringing the Guides for summer vacation reading. Laughter ensues.
